A cheap fleece balaclava is two flat pieces sewn together. The seam sits right on your cheekbone under a helmet strap, the mouth panel is solid so your breath goes straight up into your goggles, and the whole thing is the same thickness everywhere, so you are too hot on the crown and still cold at the neck.
This one is knitted in the round on a seamless machine. The knit changes density as it goes: dense thermal blocks over the crown, ears and nape where you lose heat, a fine mesh zone over the mouth so your breath vents forward instead of up, and ribbed stretch panels at the temples so it grips without squeezing.
