Most winter beanies are knitted, and knitting has holes in it. That is fine standing at a bus stop. It is not fine at eleven below with a wind coming across an open field, because the wind goes straight through the loops and your ears are done in ten minutes.
This one is cut from thick brushed polar fleece, not knitted. It is a solid wall of fabric with a deep soft nap on both faces, so there is nothing for the wind to get through. It sits close to the skull and pulls down over your ears the way a watch cap should, with a clean topstitched hem and no cuff to bunch up. That flat profile is the point: it goes under a helmet, under a hood, under a hard hat without pushing anything out of place, and it does not slide off when you look down.
